Jack Kerr, Manager of Labour

Jack Kerr Sensei, ZNIR 3rd Dan, has been dedicatedly practicing Iaido for 8 years at Shoshinki Victoria under the tutelage of Denton Hewgill Sensei, Takeji Itoh Sensei and Chris Tooley Sensei. He is a former R.C.M.P. Officer, former businessman, former Power Engineer 4th Class and now retired. He is an accomplished master wood carver and enjoys fishing in his retirement.

Jack Sensei started martial arts at age 20 in the mid 1970’s, studying Chito-Ryu karate (thousand year style) and obtained the rank of 3rd Dan in 2002 and the title of Shidoin in 2006 (international karate teacher). Jack Sensei was an affiliated member and certified instructor by Karate BC, the provincial body governing sport karate which is funded by Sport Canada on the National level from 1980 to 2012. His karate highlight in Chito-ryu was being awarded his 2nd Dan by Soke Tsuyoshi Chitose, 10th Dan Hanshi, from Kumamoto City, Kyushu, Japan. Soke Chitose also gave him a personalized hand written calligraphy in Japanese “seshin o wasurezu wa to nin o motte nashi” which translated means “ with peace, perseverance and hard work”.

He also studied kobudo, iaido, bo staff, sai and tonfa during his 40 years of study of Chito-ryu karate.
Jack Sensei joined Shoshinkai in 2016 and in particular enjoys the new focus iaido brings to his lifelong study of the Japanese martial arts and the Japanese culture.

Jack Kerr Sensei was named Manager of Labour for the Canadian Iaido Association on November 3rd, 2024.
